Now in stock from ScaleTrains is its first production of EMD SD7 and SD9 locomotives as part of its premium “Rivet Counter” line in a wide range of paint schemes and liveries. With its prototypes all powered by a normally-aspirated EMD 16-cylinder prime mover ranging from 1,500 horsepower with the SD7 to 1,750 horsepower for the SD9, these sure-footed locomotives were ideally suited for low-speed heavy-haul assignments such as hump duty in large classification yards and hauling unit ore trains, locals and transfer jobs.
These highly-detailed replicas feature road- and era-specific details and lettering and a precision drive system with all wheels powered and providing electrical pickup. Road names for ScaleTrains Rivet Counter SD7 liveries include Union Pacific, Southern Pacific (SD7Rs), Great Northern (as-delivered), and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (Blackbird). ScaleTrains Rivet Counter SD9 road names include Conrail and Norfolk Southern.
Silent DC/DCC-ready SD7 and SD9 locomotives with a 21-pin DCC plug begin at $214.99 MSRP, while DCC+Sound locomotives equipped with an ESU Loksound 5 decoder with ESU Power Pack retail for $324.99 MSRP. Available now from your favorite authorized dealer or direct while supplies last.

Road-specific details on Union Pacific SD7 451 include extra height exhaust stacks, “canvas”-style sun shades, rerail frogs, rooftop winterization hatch, illuminated Mars Signal Co. oscillating lights front and rear and more.
Southern Pacific Railroad upgraded its fleet of 43 aging SD7s in 1980 with new electrical components, power assemblies and other new or remanufactured components. Part of the process entailed removing the dynamic brake and dynamic brake fan assemblies for some units as shown here on ScaleTrains’ replica of SP SD7R 1530.
