Now available from Athearn Genesis is its latest release of premium level, highly detailed EMD GP38-2 locomotives in HO scale, now with illuminated number boards and illuminated classification lights (where appropriate).
The EMD GP38-2, produced by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, was the successor to the EMD GP38. Introduced in 1972, it featured a series of evolutionary improvements meant to improve reliability and ease maintenance. Notable changes included modular electrical components that promised shorter downtime for repairs, new truck designs, and numerous other incremental improvements. The GP38-2 from this “Dash-2” product line was a great success, with over 1,800 units built by the mid-1980s.
Athearn’s Genesis EMD GP38-2s locomotives are offered in a multitude of production phases and are detailed not only according to a specific road name for a particular era, but to match details for each and every road number per exhaustive research wherever possible. Beginning with this latest release, Athearn’s Genesis GP38-2s now feature illuminated number boards and illuminated classification lights (where applicable) as well as separately-applied grab irons, see-through rooftop cooling fans with etched screens, detailed cab interior with seats and control stand, MU hoses, different sized fuel tanks, several dynamic brake configurations, a plethora of underbody details and a precision drive system featuring dual flywheels.
Road names for this latest production include: Union Pacific (large lettering), BNSF (Heritage I), Milwaukee Road, Chehalis Western, Norfolk Southern (Thoroughbred), and EMD Lease (maroon, silver).
DC/DCC-ready GP38-2s with 21-pin DCC plugs are priced at $229.99, while DC+DCC+Sound GP38s equipped with Tsunami2 sound from Soundtraxx are $329.99 each MSRP. Available now at your favorite dealer or direct.
