This Quad-door car emblazoned with the 1970s era logo of the Norfolk & Western Railroad is typical of these ginormous 10,000 cubic foot capacity boxcars that dutifully traveled between automotive suppliers in the Upper Midwest to automotive assembly plants located all over the USA. Quad door cars were preferred by General Motors, but as years passed, their assignments and wanderings became more frequent to other shippers and consignees.

NS 487324 wears a one-of-a-kind gray livery after it was repainted. Unique upon unique like its prototype, NS 487324 features a pair of red replacement plug doors on this side only, while the other side has gray doors.

Southern Railway 42379 represents one of the Thrall-built Quad-door 86’ boxcars for the Southern Railway.  Note the see-through etched metal crossover platform at the end of this car with realistic side profile and separate “trombone-style” cut levers to accommodate the extended draft gear echoing the end-of-car-cushioned draft gear of its prototype.

Each Thrall 86’ Boxcar from ClassOneModelWorks features a full complement of multimedia underbody details including full brake rigging with wire form piping and retaining valve levers, rubber air hoses, sturdy brass stirrup steps and extended cushion draft gear with metal knuckle couplers.
