Athearn Genesis HO UTC 33,000 Gallon Tank Cars
Among the latest arrivals from Athearn are HO scale Athearn Genesis UTC 33,000 gallon flammable commodity tank cars. Built by Union Tank Car in recent years, these contemporary cars are commonly used to transport Liquid Petroleum Gas, Anhydrous Ammonia and other flammable commodities.
One of the liveries offered in this release is Capital Finance (CBTX), finished in an atypical yet highly realistic glossy black finish depicting brand-new cars on their way to their first carload.
Positioned at the pinnacle of Athearn’s product offerings, this group of highly-detailed cars feature three different body styles (early, flat panel and late), photoetched walkway and manway platforms, hazmat commodity placard holders, wire handrails and safety railings, 36” machined metal wheelsets with animated rotating axle endcaps and more. Athearn HO FMC 5277 Combination-Door Boxcars
Reborn with all-new tooling from the wheels up is Athearn’s FMC 5277 cubic foot Plate C “ABOX” combination door boxcar for HO scale. Ordered by the Trailer Train Corporation in 1979 for its Railbox division for Incentive Per Diem boxcars, these ABOX cars feature an extra-wide 16’ door opening requested by shippers of lumber and other forest products. Many of these cars are still in operation today, typically for secondary owners such as Canadian National (CNA) and others. Athearn’s model features separately applied end ladders and grab irons, crisp painting and lettering, 33” diameter CNC-machined metal wheelsets, underframe detail and knuckle couplers. $41.99 MSRP each. Athearn HO FMC 5277 Plug Door Boxcars
Accompanying the rebirth of Athearn’s ABOX are two additional FMC boxcar designs also rechristened with all new tooling. RVPR 77027 represents an FMC-built 5327 cubic foot boxcar equipped with a 12-foot wide plug door and tall “Plate C” dimensional profile finished for Riverport Railroad, a short line based in Northwestern Illinois. With its patch-painted and faded exterior, this car is part of Athearn’s “Primed for Grime” series of rolling stock ready for additional weathering if desired.

Athearn HO FMC 5277 Boxcars with centered double sliding doors
Completing Athearn’s family of newly retooled FMC boxcars is a shorter-height Plate B boxcar of 5077 cubic foot capacity with centered double sliding doors, as represented here by Seattle & North Coast 1070. Other paint schemes include McCloud River Railroad (white/brown), Sierra Railroad (ex-MR), Western Pacific, Union Pacific (WP reporting marks, Superior Doors), and Camino, Placerville and Lake Tahoe (brown). Roundhouse HO 50’ External Post Mechanical Reefers
New from Athearn’s entry level Roundhouse series is a new production of Athearn’s classic HO scale 50-foot exterior post mechanical reefer cars. These reefers are based on prototypes built during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Offered in six different paint schemes, these two cars are finished for Fruit Growers Express and Santa Fe.
