Designed expressly to haul scrap metals and other loose materials, National Steel Car (NSC) has been producing high sided flat bottom steel gondolas with a 6400 cubic foot capacity since 2006. In 2018, a 6000 cubic foot version with slightly lower sides also entered production. Owned by metal resellers, producers and leasing companies, both versions are a common sight across North America today.
Now in stock at your favorite dealers is an all-new family of highly-detailed NSC 6000cf and 6400cf High Sided Gondolas from Athearn Genesis. Offered in nine different order-specific build variations for the 6400s alone, these all-new models are available in multiple order-specific body styles featuring different end variations, different top chords, multiple ladder configurations, lost-wax cast brass stirrups for durability and multimedia brake rigging and newly tooled Barber S-2-E 100-ton trucks with animated bearing caps. Each car includes a removable scrap load or cover (CIT Group) where appropriate.
Reflecting its prototypes, Athearn’s NSC 6400s are slightly taller in height than the later 6000 cubic foot versions. Road names for the NSC 6400s include American Iron & Metal (AIMX), Cardella (CWSX), DEAX, Murphy Road Recycling (MRRX), Residco (OFOX), IWXX, Coastal Distribution (CDEX), The CIT Group (CIGX), West Coast Cooperative (WCTX), and American Railcar Leasing (FWTX). These cars are $64.99 MSRP each or $109.99/two-pack.
